Review of Concentrate: A Great App to Help You Focus

Concentrate is an amazing app to aid you in focusing on your Mac.  Essentially, you program it to close applications, block websites, open applications, change your desktop background, and much more.

What I Like

Simplicity

Using concentrate is quite simple, create an activity, name it, and tell it what you want it to do.  I love that.  It has everything you need in a very simple package.

Helpfulness

Concentrate is incredibly helpful and good at what it does.  It has helped me concentrate much more as well as get more done.

Groups

I love the groups feature.  ”Out-of-the-box” Concentrate comes with a few useful groups including Social Networks.  Groups essentially allows you to put websites or applications together and add them to block or open in one fell swoop.  Groups is one of my favorite feature in Concentrate.

What I Would Like to See

Quit All

I would like the ability to quit all application except the ones that I need.  At the moment, you have to select individual applications or groups to block.

Lock Computer

I would like the ability to lock everything on the computer and just show the concentrate logo with a done button for tasks that don’t require a computer.

Possible Actions

  • Launch Applications
  • Quit Applications
  • Open a Document
  • Open Websites
  • Block Websites
  • Set Chat Status
  • Switch to Space (Works in Lion)
  • Change Desktop Picture
  • Run a Script
  • Play a Sound
  • Speak a Message

My Activities

I thought it would be useful to outline my activities in Concentrate.

Coding

-Launch Coda and Transmit (Quit when done)

-Quit Sparrow (Block; Relaunch when done)

-Block Websites: General Distractions, Social Networks, and Video Sites

-Set iChat and Skype status to away (Available when done)

Homework

-Launch Pages and Spotify

-Quit iChat, Sparrow, Safari, Skype (Block; Relaunch when done)

-Change Desktop Picture (Lightning)

Wrap Up

Concentrate is a simple yet powerful application for aiding in focus.  It is available for purchase at http://getconcentrating.com/ for $29.

It looks good, but it doesn’t seem worth $30
